c. Test clearance between piston rings and grooves.
(1) Remove carbon from grooves.
(2) Place compression ring 1 in groove and measure clearance at several points around ring.
(3) If clearance exceeds 0.0059 in. (0.15 mm), replace compression ring.

(4) Perform steps 1 - 3 with compression ring 2.
(5) Place oil ring in groove and measure clearance.
(6) If clearance exceeds 0.0059 in. (0.15 mm), replace oil ring.
REPLACE
a. Use piston ring expander to remove two compression rings (1 and 2, Figure 6-21), Sheet 3,
expander joint (3), and oil ring (4).
NOTE
Install rings into same groove from which they were
removed from.
NOTE
When
installing
piston
rings,
ensure
that
manufacturer’s mark (5), near gap, faces up.
