TM 5-6115-365-15 Section II.  OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 2-3.  Setting-Up Instructions a. Leveling. (1) Locate  the  trailer  on  as  level  a  surface  as possible   in   order   for   the   generator   sets   to   operate efficiently. (2) Set  brakes  and  block  wheels  securely  to prevent  any  movement.    Operate  handbrake  at  weekly intervals to assure freedom of linkage. (3) Pull    the    leg    support    down    and    adjust length for firm contact with ground. Warning Wheels  must  be  blocked,  brakes  set, and    leg    support    down    in    support position  before  attempting  to  roll  up the  tarpaulin  and  before  starting  to assemble or set-up the equipment for operation. b. Grounding. Warning Never  operate  the  generator  set  until it has been properly grounded. Electrical  defects  in  the  load  lines  or equipment can cause death by electrocution  when  contact  is  made with an ungrounded system. (1) The generator set must be grounded prior to operation.  The ground may be any of three methods, depending on the location and terrain. (a) The  ground  rod  driven  to  a  depth  of 8 feet. (b) An underground metallic water piping system. (c) A  metal  plate  (9  sq  ft)  buried  at  a depth of 4 feet. (2) The   ground   lead   must   be   No.   6   AWG copper wire bolted or clamped to the rod, plate, or piping system. (3) Connect  the  other  end  of  the  ground  lead to the generator set ground stud as shown in figure 2-2. (4) Be sure that both generators are connected to the generator set ground stud as shown in figure 2-2. c. Preparation for Starting. (1) Remove  the  canvas  tarpaulin  and  remove the racks. (2) Open   the   trailer   tailgate   and   remove   all loose  auxiliary  items  and  anything  else  that  might  block the  free  circulation  of  air  through  the  trailer  and  around the generator sets. Caution It    is    of    foremost    importance    that there be free circulation of air around the generator sets at all times during operation.  Inadequate ventilation is a major     cause     of     damage     to     the equipment. (3) Be   sure   the   transfer   switch   load   cables are   connected   to   the   generator   sets   as   illustrated   in figure 2-3. (4) Connect   the   fuel   hoses   as   illustrated   in figure 2-4. Warning Never operate the generator set in an enclosed    area    unless    the    exhaust gases    are    piped    to    the    outside. Inhalation    of    exhaust    fumes    will result in serious illness or death. 2-4.  Starting a. Perform  setting-up  and  pre-starting  procedures (para 2-3). b. Be    sure    generator    transfer    switch    is    OFF (fig. 2-3). c. Start the generator set as instructed in TM 5-6115-271-14. 2-5.  Stopping a. Turn generator transfer switch OFF or in position to select standby generator (fig. 2-3). b. Stop the generator set as instructed in TM 5-6115-271-14. 2-6.  Operation a. Start    the    generator    (para    2-4)    and    position transfer switch to desired generator. b. Operate the generator as instructed in TM 5-6115-271-14. c.
